NYSSMA Solo Festival Reminders
NYSSMA Manual Edition 29 (Effective July 2009) is out. Does your Manual have yellow and white pages? If your answer is "Yes," then you have the current edition! If you are going to send students to NYSSMA festivals, you should either own or have regular access to a NYSSMA Manual. With every new edition of the Manual come changes. Please check the listings carefully. Words to the wise: Start early!!! Read the Rules and Regulations!!! Check and double check the listings and requirements before you begin working with your own students!! Be sure to check the listings and requirements ahead of time for your students who study privately. Make sure that your students obtain their music early--at least a month before the festival is not too early!!! Plan on being with your students at the solo festival-they'll appreciate the moral support, it's a great way to get to know their parents (and for them to get to know you!) and you will be there in the event that a problem arises.

NYSSMA Manual Corrections
Please click the link below to download a copy of the addendum for the current NYSSMA manual. It addresses a number of collections where the specific choices for each level have been omitted. Please note the letter at the beginning of the guide explaining NYSSMA's position on the contents of the manual. The current School Music News contains a pullout version of the guide that will be ready to be directly inserted into the manual.

New Jazz Drum Set Requirements
When sending students for NYSSMA Jazz Drum Set Adjudications on Levels V and VI, please make sure that they are aware of the new requirements at these levels. Students are now required to demonstrate Ensemble Skills, as described on page 9-14 of the NYSSMA Manual. Some students attending solo festivals in our county have not been notified by their teachers of these new requirements and have lost 15 points because they were not properly prepared.
